Understanding Product Types
Not all products have the same requirements which is why there are multiple product types.
- Single Item
- Web Packaged Items
- Web Only
- Downloadable
- Web Article
You might be asking yourself why we have so many types of products. Most small ecommerce sites that begin to make serious money begin to think about cutting costs. This process usually includes the use of warehouse management.
Although not all ecommerce sites need the ability to use warehouse management we have built it into the software.
Single Item
A single item is the most strict of all product types. This type is the recommended Product Type for warehouse management. You do not have all the flexibility of options with this type because warehouse management requires real stock inventory. If you are trying to track an individual item with an individual color or size this is the Product Type you should use.
Web Packaged Item
This is a combination between "Single Item" and "Web Only". You can have the luxury of inventory control with the benefits of product options.
Web Only
This Product Type is best used for products that are either drop-shipped or have complex options. One scenario would be a product that has many sizes and colors. Web Only will allow you to create as many options and groups of options that you would like.
Downloadable
If you plan on selling PDF's , Software or any type of soft good this Product Type should be used. This will allow you to upload a file that can only be accessed after the user purchases the item.
Web Article
This is not a product that can be purchased. This Product Type can allow you create things like Monthly Newsletters, Blogs, Wiki's and many other types of web services.
